Company History

Barrett Precision Tubes was formed in 2004 from the amalgamation of the then recently acquired Star Tubes at Elvington and Tayside Tubes at Tockwith by Barrett Steel Ltd. The addition of these two precision tube companies to the Tube Division of the Bradford based company complimented the Group's existing 80,000 tonnes of general and structural steel sections with an additional 2,000 tonnes of ERW precision tubes which opened up a whole new customer base.

The acquisition of companies by Barrett Steel is nothing new, as can be seen throughout it's history. A history which can be traced back to its origins in 1867 when Henry Barrett left his employment with Cordingly Armstrong, a Bradford iron stockholding company and started his own steel stockholding business. Way back in 1910 Henry started on the acquisition trail when he purchased Robert's Iron Foundry at Dudley Hill which to this day is still the site of our head office. Over the years more companies were acquired including Cordingly Armstrong, the founder's old employers, in 1965. At present there are over 50 businesses working from 25 sites with over 850 employees and a turnover in excess of £250m. The head of the company is still a member of the Barrett family with James being Group Managing Director.

Products and Services

We hold stocks of over 2,000 tonnes of precision tubes at our Elvington site in addition to numerous associated products including Handrail & Walkway products, Tubeclamps, Wrought Iron components and the Qrail Stainless Steel Balustrading System available from group stocks.

Barrett Precision are committed to ongoing investment in meeting our customers needs. This is demonstrated by the recent commissioning of our first tube laser, the LT651. Tube lasers remove the need for costly prototypes making complex structures easier and quicker to design and fabricate with re-designs being made by the click of a mouse. Please view our Lasertube brochure below for details of the LT651 and the full range of lasers available within our group.

Our other in-house processing facilities comprise of 5 saws, drilling equipment, rumbling and de-burring machines and a punch. The saws allow us to process up to 25,000 cuts per shift. With our on site drilling equipment and with off site tube laser machines we are also able to offer finished components for either large batch quantities or for sample approval with a rapid turn around and comparably low costs to conventional tooling machines. Heavy investment in the latest tube laser machinery has seen the recent commisioning of the largest tube laser in the world. It is capable of processing up to 508 mm o/d, 500 mm x 300 mm rectangles and 400 mm x 400 mm square hollow sections in lengths up to 15 m.

We operate our own fleet of vehicles ranging from 10t vehicles to articulated units capable of carrying 25 tonnes allowing us to offer a fast and reliable delivery service.
